Smart Moves, LLC, is a group fitness program for older adults, blending dance with exercise and social interaction to improve well-being and promote independence. Smart Moves classes can be beneficial to anyone needing a softer approach to fitness.

Most classes last 45 minutes and consist of stretching and strengthening exercises in or with a chair and easy line dancing. Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. To join a class arrive early at the time and location and introduce yourself to the instructor. ALL PARTICIPANTS SHOULD CHECK WITH THEIR PHYSICIANS BEFORE PARTICIPATION IN THIS OR ANY EXERCISE PROGRAM.

Instructor Training Workshops
 
There is a great need for instructors with the knowledge, skills, ability, and personality to lead senior exercise classes. Instructor Training workshops are held quarterly in various locations in Jefferson County. Workshops are usually conducted at a Senior Center, Residence Facility or other appropriate location.
 
In these workshops, participants learn:
  • How to design a group exercise class for older adults
  • And practice the skills to lead a class
 Topics include:
  • Exercise/movement selection
  • How to teach and lead chair exercises and chair dances
  • How to teach and lead line dances
  • Verbal and non-verbal cueing skills
  • Posture and breathing techniques
  • Exercises for the prevention of falls
  • How to select and use music within a group exercise class
  • Safety issues
  • Teaching resources – local and national
  • And much more
Workshop leadership is provided by Jackie Tally and Smart Moves staff.
Workshops usually last one day (7-8 hours). Internships are available.

Health & Fitness at the Oaks on Parkwood
 
Free yoga classes with Rama Khalsa at Noland Hall on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month. Rama has been teaching yoga for 35 years.
Free strength training classes at Noland Hall on Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m.
